This workshop carries the theme ‘Training for Development of Ecological Literacy Competence through Writing Creativity and Publishing Opinion Articles with Environmental Preservation for State Senior High School Students in Surakarta City’ by presenting 4 speakers. The four speakers are Prof. Dr. Sarwiji Suwandi, M.Pd., Dr. Sugit Zulianto, M.Pd., Dr. Nugraheni Eko Wardani, M. Hum., and Chafit Ulya, M.Pd.

The event was attended by a number of Masters and Doctoral students, Indonesian high school teachers in Surakarta, and the general public. “We want to improve the competence of our junior high school students to be able to write articles, opinions with environmental insight. Fellow teachers who have attended this workshop when they return to school can design lessons that are not only aimed at achieving the Core Competencies and Basic Competencies (KI & KD) that have been set in the curriculum but also contain the value of ecological literacy. We hope that the children can preserve the environment,” said Prof. Sarwiji.

The first material was presented by Prof. Dr. Sarwiji Suwandi, M.Pd. He opened his presentation by saying that the United Nations (UN) Environment Program regularly reports that the level of damage to the earth is increasing. In Indonesia alone, according to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) as many as 1,724 disaster events have hit Indonesia throughout 2020. Prof. Sarwiji added, this can happen because of human activities.

“In addition to natural factors, many researches state that various disasters are caused by human activities, namely the lack of public awareness of protecting the environment,” explained Prof. Sarwiji.

Prof. Sarwiji also offers several strategies to minimize the occurrence of disasters such as increasing insight and environmental care behavior, optimizing the role of books as an important factor in education that can transfer knowledge about nature, and implementing learning based on the values of love for the environment for teachers. UNS also establishes partnerships with schools through the creativity of writing opinion articles with environmental perspective for high school students and holding workshops on environmental conservation and article writing.

Furthermore, the second material was delivered by Dr. Sugit Zulianto, M.Pd. which reviews the writing of environmental opinion opinion articles. Writing is a thought process. There are several stages that a person must go through when they want to write.

“There are 3 stages that are passed, namely pre-writing, writing, and post-writing. At the pre-writing stage, a writer must determine the topic, material, and title,” explained Dr. Sugit.

At the writing stage, the writer can begin to outline, start writing, and revise. Finally, at the post-writing stage, the author can edit, pay attention to the style, and publication.

According to Dr. Sugit, when choosing a topic should avoid plagiarism, bring up the latest and actual things. The theme raised must also be phenomenal. The next presentation of the material was delivered by Dr. Nugraheni Eko Wardani, M. Hum.

On this occasion, Dr. Nugraheni discusses environmental issues from various sources that can be used to write opinion articles. According to Dr. Nugraheni, in writing opinion articles, one must be sensitive to environmental problems that occur around them. There are several environmental problems that can be raised in writing.
“The environmental problems can be in the form of pollution, global warming, indiscriminate disposal of waste and garbage, as well as flooding,” explained Dr. Nugraheni.

Finally, the material was provided by Chafit Ulya, M.Pd who reviewed the procedures for submitting opinion articles in online media. Online media can be an option for writing publications for several reasons.

“Online media is practical, fast, open, and according to the demands of the times,” explained Chafit.

Chafit gives some tips when you want to send writing to online media, namely, determine the online media you want to go to. Then, follow the guidelines for writing on the media. No less important is to understand the characteristics of writing. Then, submit it and wait for the article to be published.

The event is interactive. There were several questions that came in from both participants in the Zoom Meeting and at LPPM. Ira Prihapsari, S.Pd., one of the workshop participants admitted that this event was very useful.
“The insight is more open then this activity is very useful, adding insight related to environmental issues for teachers and students. Tips for writing articles are also shared, where we are trained to think critically to express our thoughts. That’s it. Good, very useful,” explained Ira, who is a teacher at Pradipta Dirgantara High School. UNS Public Relations
